Crawley Unaware of Captain Stokes' Controversial 'Frail Characters' Comments

The English opener Crawley has indicated he had no knowledge of statements from captain Stokes about the team environment as no place for "weak men".

The all-rounder delivered those words in several interviews following England's defeat in the second match of the Ashes series against the Australians previously.

Ahead of the third Test, where the visitors now face defeat with a match to spare, the captain noted he had let his sentiment to "drift around" within the playing group.

"I have completed the necessary discussions over the past two days that I needed to have done," remarked the England leader.

But, after the opener scored 85 on the fourth day in Adelaide, he commented: "I missed those remarks."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. Our approach is to take anything stated in the press with a pinch of salt," Crawley continued.

Frank Discussions and Consistent Messaging

Stokes made the "weak men" comment subsequent to his side suffered a loss in Brisbane to go 2-0 down.

The England squad subsequently took a break to Noosa in the gap between the second and third matches.

Prior to the Adelaide contest, he revealed his team had held "raw" conversations and he had asked them to "display some fight" in their effort to stay in contention in the series.

Nevertheless, the Kent batsman stated the guidance from the captain and coach Brendon McCullum had remained in line with their prior three years in leadership.

"It's been very positive, the same as always," said the opener. "The focus is on maintaining positivity, play our way, with great liberty. We believed we could do something special entering this Test."

Australia On the Verge of Rapid Series Victory

The opener's dismissal on day four was part of a crucial three-wicket burst by Australian off-spinner Nathan Lyon.

The spinner's three wickets in 20 deliveries – he also bowled Brook and Ben Stokes – left England 207-6 chasing a daunting target of 435 runs.

This means, the home team need just four more wickets on the final day to secure an unassailable three-nil advantage after three Tests.

A loss would prolong the English team's winless run in Australia to 18 Tests and ensure a fourth successive overseas Ashes series loss.

This series is set to be decided in only 11 days of cricket – after England losing the initial matches in rapid time each.

Not since 1921, when Australia completed victory in England in eight days, has the destination of the Ashes urn been determined so quickly. Australia have also triumphed in 11 days on two other instances in the modern era.

"This is disheartening," admitted Crawley. "Our goal was to regain the Ashes and we're facing elimination now."

"There remains significant pride at stake and we will certainly approach it like that," Crawley added.

"It's been difficult. Australia is a very, very good team. It was always going to be tough touring here against them. They entered as the front-runners and they've proven why."

Ollie Pope's Place Under Scrutiny

While Crawley's innings in Adelaide probably answers doubts about his short-term place in the side, Pope looks under threat for his position in the Melbourne Test starting December 26th.

Pope fell for 17 in the team's second innings on Saturday, adding to his poor record against the old enemy.

In sixteen Ashes knocks, Pope has failed to score a half-century and boasts an average of 17.62.

A solitary other England player since 1900 – Dennis Amiss – has played as many times in the top six in the Ashes and returned a lower average.

But, the opener said any suggestion Pope is being scrutinised comes from "you guys" – meaning the press – "not inside the camp."

"We all know how good of a player he is," added Crawley. "Ollie has enjoyed a productive year to be frank."

"He has played some really good knocks. This is talk externally. There's no chat like that regarding Pope in the camp," he concluded.
